The reproductive capacity and the life span of groupedcouples of Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1974), whose larvae were bred for two generations on a diet based on a dog food known as Pedigree® Júnior were evaluated. A control treatment was conducted with adults originated from a larval diet based on beef (300C-day and 280C-night, R.H. of 60± 10%, 14 hours of photophase). After the insects emergence 4 repetitions with 15 couples were made. The average weight of the mass of eggs in Pedigree sample was 1387.3 mg. It was noted that the adults originating from maggots fed with the artificial larval diet lived slightly longer than the adults from the control group. No significant differences were seen in relation to the control group for both tests. The results show that the artificial diet under study displays great potential for utilization in the breeding and maintenance of these dipterous in the laboratory.
