Chlorophyll a is a pigment also produced by cyanobacteria, which is why it is used as an indicator of their presence. Cyanobacteria are responsible for releasing toxins with harmful effect on human health. Thus, the present work aims to verify the presence of chlorophyll a in groundwater. For this, 15 samples were collected and analyzed by the spectrophotometry method. According to the data obtained, it was possible to verify the presence of chlorophyll in 5 of the 15 wells analyzed, raising an alert to the authorities about the quality of groundwater that is used to supply a large part of the population of the State of Ceará. With this, it is concluded that, despite chlorophyll a not being a parameter monitored by the current ordinance for groundwater, it is necessary to monitor the quality of the wells, since they can suffer contamination and cyanobacteria to develop.
