In veterinary dermatological clinical routine, it is important to have rapid and non-invasive diagnostic resources that help in the therapeutic choice for each case, as for example, the cytological examination. Due to the intrinsic limitations of this exam, whenever possible, it should be associated with a histopathological result for a more accurate diagnostic. This paper reported the case of a Dobermann puppy that had an exophytic, erythematous, nodular lesion on the tail, with a history of surgery at the site, which was diagnosed by cytology as a benign mesenchymal lesion associated with a subacute inflammatory process. After histopathological examination, the clinical suspicion of keloid, which was compatible with cytology, was confirmed. The cytological examination was essential for the adequacy of the surgical management used in the case and had a good correlation results with the histopathological examination, validating the importance of this exam in the routine of clinical consultations.
