Despite the affinity of bats for caves there are few studies regarding this theme in Braziliankarstic areas (Trajano 1995). It is widely know that caves are used as roots by bats in Brazil (see Trajano 1995 and references therein). However, there are no species of bats in Brazil restricted to caves, as occurs in Mexico and Cuba (Trajano 1996). Furthermore, bat species richness, as with many animals and plants, follows a species area-curve (Rosenzweig 1995). Thus, local presence of bats species should be influenced by the occurance of caves and size of the forest fragments.
